Overview Map

Set the size and position of the overview map, or remove it.

Units are always the same as the main map units

If "Lock to map width" is checked (default), then the overview map width will adjust as you change the main map width to maintain the same relative size.

The area displayed in the overview map can be changed by dragging or zooming (using your scroll wheel or the +/- buttons) the map displayed in the inset preview. The overview can be reset to the default view by clicking the "Reset View" button.

The colormap used to draw the overview map can be changed by setting the "Colormap" field. This can be done by either typing in the name of any GMT supported colormap (the "cmap" argument to the makecpt function) or by clicking the "Select" button which will bring up a dialog in which you can click on the desired colormap.

If left empty ("auto"), the colormap used will be the same as the one selected for the main map.

Custom Basemap Image

Upload an image to use instead of the default hillshade files

Supports single GeoTIFF files, or image/world file pairs (.jpg/.jgw or .tif/.tfw)

If using paired image/world files, the projection used must be specified. Currently only Alaska Albers is supported.

Any areas not covered by the uploaded image will be filled with the standard hillshade product.

Inset Map(s)

Add one or more inset maps that will be displayed overlaying the main map, for example to show a zoomed-in region

Once you have added an inset map, you can move or resize said inset just like you would a normal window - that is, you can move the inset to a different location on the main map by dragging the inset's title bar, or resize it by dragging the corner/side.

Remove an inset by clicking the delete button next to the inset title in this box.

Data Plot

Plot data from a CSV on map

    • Will not be displayed if "Show Colorbar" is set to "None"
  • Range: The range of values to scale the colorbar to.
    • Auto-scaled to data min/max values if blank
    • The color of values outside this range is undefined

All Stations/Markers

Station(s) and other custom (via CSV) markers to be ploted on the map.

Station list is retrieved automatically from https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/api/instrumentApi for the area displayed in the main map (inset maps are assumed to be a subset of the main map, and therfore covered by the same area).

You can add aditional stations or other custom markers to be plotted by uploading a CSV file with the following columns:

Latitude Longitude Name Category ID

Where "Category ID" is one of the following:
Type ID
Seismometer1
Tiltmeter3
GPS4
Gas7
Teperature12
Camera22
Infrasound23
The first row of the CSV is assumed to be a header row and is ignored.

Once a CSV file has been selected, a "Clear Upload" button will appear that can be clicked to remove all markers added from the CSV from the list and remove the selected CSV file.

Custom labels (for the key), icons, and, in some cases, colors can be set for each category by clicking the "Display Options" button. This allows you to use one of the "standard" station types for other purposes - for example, you could set the "camera" station type label to "Targeted Volcano", and set it to use a filled black triangle icon, while setting the "Temperature" label to "Other Volcano" and setting the icon to a white triangle. Then, after deselecting the auto-retrieved temperature and camera stations (if any), you could upload a CSV of volcano locations, grouped into those two categories.

Upload CSV:

All Volcanoes

Volcano(es) to be ploted on the map.

Volcano list is retrieved automatically from https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/vsc/api/volcanoApi/regionstatus for the area displayed in the main map (inset maps are assumed to be a subset of the main map, and therfore covered by the same area), and filtered by historicaly active status.

Optionally, labels can be shown for each volcano by choosing the location relative to the volcano in which to show the label from the "Show names:" pull-down list.

Individual label positions can be modified by dragging the label on the map, or clicking the "Edit Label Locations" button to edit locations numerically.
